Special Exhibition - Unlocking the House

Special Exhibition - Unlocking the House

What do a gold bingo-ball cage, a 'full-bottomed' wig and an antique barrel key have in common? They're all curiosities in exhibition Unlocking the House, which opens the door to unique and often colourful stories from across the 200-year history of the Legislative Council –  the Upper House of the NSW Parliament, and the first and oldest legislative body in Australia.

Unearthed from the vaults and on display together for the first time, the items feature alongside documents and photos to tell 10 stories that unlock parliamentary practice and tradition, as well as change. The journey spans from the Council's early colonial history to the modern day.

So whether you want to take a quick peek at some parliamentary paraphernalia or delve deeper into the workings of the Upper House, Unlocking the House is a special opportunity to step into the home of democracy in NSW.

As the Legislative Council prepares to celebrate its Bicentenary in 2024, Unlocking the House marks just the beginning of an exciting program of commemorative events and activities exploring the foundations and evolution of the Upper House, and of democracy in NSW. Discover more about the Bicentenary.
