About the Budget Estimates inquiry

Ministers and senior public servants attend an annual Budget Estimates inquiry to answer questions about the expenditure, performance and effectiveness of their agencies. 

Budget Estimates is a key process for government accountability and transparency. The Budget Estimates inquiry involves detailed questioning on the decisions, actions and advice of ministers and public servants.

The Budget Estimates inquiry is conducted by the Legislative Council’s eight Portfolio Committees.

Budget Estimates hearings are open to the public and are webcast live on the Parliament's website.


Budget Estimates 2024-2025

​The Budget Estimates and related papers for 2024-2025 were referred by the House to the Portfolio Committees for inquiry and report on 20 June 2024. Known as the Budget Estmates resolution, the referral sets the terms of reference​ for the inquiry into Budget Estimates 2024-2025.​

The following dates have been set aside for hearings:

​Initial hearings
​27 August to 30 August 2024
3 September to 6 September 2024
9 September to 11 September 2024
​Supplementary hearings
​​2 December to 6 December 2024

​The Budget Estimates Guide 2024-2025​ contains more information about Budget Estimates processes and procedures, along with committee membership and the timetable for the initial hearings both by date and by committee.


Initial hearings 2024​​

It is anticipated that transcripts will be available on the morning of the next business day after a hearing.

Video recordings are expected to be available on the NSW Parliament's You Tube channel the afternoon of the next business day following the hearing. ​​​
