Welcome to the NSW Legislative Council, the first and oldest legislative body in Australia. Established in 1823, the Council will celebrate its Bicentenary in 2023.
The Legislative Council is the Upper House of the NSW Parliament. It is often called the ‘House of Review’ because of its role in scrutinising Government legislation, and holding the Government to account. In addition to its legislative work, the Council also scrutinises the Government in other ways, such as the questioning of Ministers at Question Time and through our active committee system.
I’m very pleased to welcome you to our website. This website will tell you about what is happening in the Council and its committees, as well as providing information about the procedures and history of the House.
I invite all of you to visit Parliament in person, particularly when the Council is sitting, so you can observe democracy at work in Australia’s oldest Parliament.
The Hon. Matthew Mason-Cox MLC
