Qualifications, occupations and interests
Real estate agent and Auctioneer. Educated at Harwich National School and Southwark Borough School. Migrated to New Zealand with family when 13. Worked on coastal ships. Apprenticed to an engineer in 1861. Moved to Sydney in 1867; until c.1883 worked as an engineer at docks owned by T.S Mort, P.N Russell Australasian Steam Navigation Company, and Davy and Sands. Later became a successful estate agent and auctioneer, chairman of City and Country Investment Land and Building Society and Director of Australian Mutual Prudential and Medical Assurance Society. Prominent trade unionist in 1870's. leader in 1873 - 1874 strikes winning an 8 hour day in iron trades. Trustee of Sydney Trades Hall 1886; Promoted pro-union legislation in Parliament.
