Lawyer (barrister). Educated at Sydney and Caen, Normandy. Entered father's office. Gained pastoral experience in Queensland. Worked in Hartley shale and oil mines which his father part owned. Read law with (Sir) Frederick Darley. Called to Bar in 1869, became a leading advocate. Commissioner of International Exhibitions in 1883, 1884, 1887 and 1888. Commissioner of Centennial Celebrations in 1888. President of Colonists Anti-Convention Bill League; resigned briefly. As Attorney General opposed Federation in 1898. Member of Fisheries Board. Trustee of National Park. Returned from Japan in 1889; visited Egypt and Britain from 1898 until 1899 and Britain again in 1903. Member of Union Club.
