Son of John Browne, grazier and philanthropist of Singleton, and his wife Elizabeth Alcorn. His paternal grandfather, David Browne, was an Irish political convict. Baptised in the Church of England at Singleton, 27 September 1842. Married Jessie Campbell MacTaggart on 12 December 1866 and had issue, 3 daughters and 5 sons.
