Pastoralist. Educated at home and at Calder House at Redfern. Became a junior clerk at Australian Joint Stock Bank at Mudgee. Acquired Gungalman cattle station on Castlereagh River in 1863 and sold out. Set up as a flour miller at Wellington. Visited Europe and Britain in 1875. In 1870's took up land in Wellington district. Founded a famous Merino stud. Bought Mt Broughton estate at Moss Vale, as residence in 1879. With brother formed Kater Brothers in 1881. Partnership was dissolved in 1906. Took son into partnership c.1910 forming a well known stud at Engelabra. Director of Colonial Sugar Refining Company Limited from 1892, chairman 1900 - 1924; director of Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited 1889 - 1924; Captain of Moss Vale Voluntary Rifle Company 1889 - 1892; President of Berrima District Agricultural Horticultural and Industrial Association. Founder of Bong Bong Picnic Race Club; Director of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital 1892 - 1924; Honorary Treasurer 1902 - 1916, vice chairman in 1918, chairman 1920 - 1923, made substantial endowments. President of Australia Club. Member of Union Club. Member of Sydney Church of England diocesan synod.
