After graduation entered the lands office until 1865.Read for the bar with M.H Stephen 1865 - 1868 but did not qualify. Speculated in business enterprises. In 1886 was the Chairman of Universal Land, Building and Investment Co. and Director of the Mercantile Building Land and Investment Company.

Son of William Gibbes and Harriet Eliza Jamison. Married Mary Jane Gill on 18 April 1883 at Moonbi, near Tamworth and had issue, 1 daughter and 1 son. Church of England. His grandfather, J. G. N. Gibbes, was Collector of Customs 1834 - 1859 and a nominated Member of the first Legislative Council. His uncle, R. T. Jamison, was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
