Life governor of Sydney Hospital; a founder of the Sydney Night Refuge and Soup Kitchen; Honorary Secretary of the Parliamentary Local Option movement and a leading Quaker.
Qualifications, occupations and interests
Soap and candle manufacturer. Apprenticed to a firm of engineers but was dismissed for associating with the early closing and eight hour movements. At different times was an engineer, gold-digger, farmer, printer, manufacturer and insurance salesman for the Australian Mutual Provident Society. After his father's death in 1869, he carried on the family soap and candle manufacturing business with his brother, William Johnston Allen, for about 25 years.

Youngest son of William Bell Allen, soap and candle manufacturer, and his wife Ruth Johnston Sayers. Married Amelia Petford on 9 September 1861, and had issue, 1 daughter and 3 sons. Quaker. He arrived in Sydney with his parents, who were assisted immigrants, on the 'Brothers' on 11 March 1841. His father was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly, as was his brother, William Johnston Allen.
