Qualifications, occupations and interests
Flour miller. Arrived in Sydney with family as bounty immigrants on 12 February 1849. Family went to the Victorian goldfields, then settled at Liverpool, New South Wales, c.1853, where father leased a flour mill and ran a bakery. By 1860 was in Sydney and opened flour mills in partnership and prospered. By early 1870s was a partner in paper manufacturing business and trustee of several building societies; speculated in mining shares. Became bankrupt in 1875, discharged in 1876. Was known as a 'kind and conscientous employer' building hot showers and Turkish baths for workers. By early 1870s was also a member of the committee Benevolent Society; director of Protestant Hall. Supported Protestant Political Association. Joined Loyal Orange Institution in 1869 but did not attack Catholicism publicly; Freemason; held office in Sons of Temperance but not a teetotaller. Leading Methodist. Returned to Liverpool in early 1880's.

Eldest son of Joseph Wearne, miller of yeoman stock, and Susannah Rogers. Married Isabella Caldwell on 21 January 1857 at Parramatta and had issue, 3 daughters and 3 sons. Methodist. His nephew, Walter Wearne, was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
