Woolscourer and fellmonger. Arrived in Australia with family in 1848. Unsuccessful miner in western districts of New South Wales and in Victoria. By 1857 was a gardener and fruitgrower in Sydney. Converted Botany swamps into fertile land. Formed a woolscouring and fellmongering business. Director of building company sponsored by Loyal Orange Institution in mid 1880s. Foreman of Grand Committee of Loyal Orange Institution from 1885 until 1889, Grand Master from 1890. Freemason. President of Botany of Arts for 15 years. Chairman of local school board. Commissioner of International Exhibition in 1888.
