Merchant, shipping agent and colliery proprieter. In 1851 held a position with the Commercial Bank. Later founded W.Laidley & Co., shipping and general agents and became a squatter on the Darling Downs. Engaged in mercantile pursuits and was a proprieter of Wallsend Co-operative Coal Company. Chairman of Commercial Union Assurance Company. Member of Board of Bank of New South Wales. Introduced the first direct steamship service from San Francisco to New South Wales. Active in charitable institutions. Recreational interests include rowing.
