Sugar grower and miller. Went to work at an early age and worked as a contractor on railways. Arrived in South Australia in 1851, shipwrecked and penniless. Engaged in railway contracting in New South Wales. District surveyor for City of Sydney. Purchased estate in the Macleay district where pioneered sugar growing; erected a sugar mill at Kempsey; later transferred to Fiji. Vice president of National Association of 1891, president in 1892, Prominent Member of Loyal Orange Institution; Deputy Grand Master in 1882. Visited England in 1885.
