Ironmonger. Educated in a Parish School; orphaned at 10; worked as a farm labourer. Arrived in Sydney as a bounty immigrant on 10 May 1839. Country fencing, tobacco planting, clearing land. Opened an ironmongery in 1846. Opened warehouses and hired 40 employees. Director and Treasurer of Australian Permanent Building and Investment Society. President of Second Industrial Benefit Building and Investment Society. Acquired a country estate at Burradoo. Early supporter of Sydney Mechanics School of Arts. Assisted in founding Sydney Technical College. Commissioner of Amsterdam International Exhibition in 1883; Licensing magistrate from 1882 until 1891. Member of Temperance Alliance. Freemason.
