Storekeeper and flour miller. Visited Australia as a child and later migrated to New South Wales c.1837. Became a poundkeeper in Queanbeyan in 1842 and a postmaster in 1844. Opened post office store in Queanbeyan in 1849; opened a second store in 1856; briefly expanding into neighbouring towns with 13 stores from 1859 until 1860. Leased Dodsworth Mill and acquired Severne Mill in 1858. Acquired control of several stations in Queanbeyan district. Business declined from 1886; Severne Mill failed; sold store in 1891. Founding member of Queanbeyan Parochial Association in 1848. President of Queanbeyan District Hospital. Office bearer in Literary Institute and Oddfellows' Happy Home Lodge. Founded Queanbeyan Free Selectors Association in 1877. Sheep director in 1880. Member of local land board; guardian of minors; returning officer for Queanbeyan in 1890.
