Qualifications, occupations and interests
Tailor and merchant. Arrived in Australia as a bounty immigrant on 22 April 1838, and worked as a tailor. Moved to Maitland where he established a general store with his brother David. In the 1850's leased over a quarter of a million acres in New England ; Warrego and Leichhardt districts. with William Dumaresq also held Glen Innes (25,000 acres) and Mole R. (60,000 acres). A founder of Hunter Steam Navigation Company 1852. Moved to Sydney after election to the Legislative Assembly, where he carried on business with Alexander Dickson and Robert Strachan as Dickson & Co., merchants. Estate valued at £100,000
