Qualifications, occupations and interests
Lawyer (solicitor) and entrepreneur. Articled to a solicitor in 1813. Admitted as a solicitor on 20 April 1820 in England. Purchased a small schooner and sailed to Australia. Admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales on 5 June 1841 later becoming a partner. Partnership dissolved in 1850. Became a large landholder in the Illawarra district. Leased coal and mineral lands and invested in collieries. Acquired squatting interests from 1840s. Appointed as a District Court Judge and Chairman of Quarter Sessions. Retired from the Bench and lived in Wollongong. Keen yachtsman and Member of Anniversary Regatta Committee. Trustee of free Public Library from 1870 until 1878.

Son of Robert Owen or Owens, sea captain, and his wife Sarah Hall. Married (1) Jessie Thriepland, and they had 1 daughter and 2 sons. Married (2) Mary Catherine Hogan on 1 February 1854 at Wollongong, and they had 3 daughters and 2 sons.
