Son of James Macarthur, elder brother of John Macarthur. Married Maria King in 1812 and had issue 6 daughters and 5 sons. His daughter Catherine Macarthur married Patrick Leslie, also a Member of the Legislative Assembly; his daughter Emmeline Macarthur married Patrick Leslie's brother, George Farquhar Leslie, who was also a Member of the first Legislative Council.
