Qualifications, occupations and interests
Medical practitioner (surgeon) and pastoralist. Entered the Royal Navy as an assistant surgeon in 1806, being promoted to surgeon in 1807. He was placed on half-pay at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814. Arrived in New South Wales as a surgeon and agent on 19 January 1816. Became an inspector of colonial hospitals in 1828. Appointed a member of the Australian Agricultural Company in 1824. However, drought and depression combined with ill advised expenditure and inexperience led to heavy financial losses.

Son of Edward and Ann Bowman of Carlisle, Cumberland, England. Married Mary Isabella Macarthur, second living daughter of John and Elizabeth Macarthur in 1823 and they had 5 children. Sudden death from apoplexy.
