Son of William Henry Planta and Amy Frances Hannaford. Married Denise Lorraine Thorburn on 6 April 1974 and had issue, 1 daughter and 2 sons. Member of the Order of Australia awarded in 2017 for significant service to the Parliament of New South Wales through a range of senior ministerial roles, to law reform, and to the community.
