Educated at Orange Grove primary school, Leichhardt and Petersham Commercial High; trained as an upholsterer; organiser in 1947, assistant secretary in 1948 and secretary from 1951 until 1977 of the Furnishing Trades Society of New South Wales., New South Wales president from 1944 until 1945; vice president of the Labor Council (TLC) from 1958 until 1965, president from 1965 until 1975; director of radio station 2KY from 1951 until 1976, director of radio station 2HD for six years; member of Housing Commission from 1958 until 1966; member of Technical Education Advisory Council from 1953 until 1974; member of Commonwealth Hostels Limited Board from 1966 until 1976, chairman from 1973 until 1976; spent three months in the United States of America in 1956 studying industrial and political developments; attended International Labor Organisation conferences in Geneva in 1960 and 1968 as an Australian trade union observer.
