Educated at Tilba Tilba, Wentworth Falls and Kiama public schools, Newington College, The King's School at Sydney, and University of Sydney where he enrolled in Agricultural Science; farmer at Bodalla until 1949, then Wallaga Lake, Tilba Tilba; won prizes for dairy fodder conservation at the Royal Agricultural Society show; director of Bodalla Co-op Dairy Company from 1927, later managing the cheese co-operative.

Served in 2nd Australian Imperial Forces (2nd AIF): Armoured Corps 1940 - 1945, Egypt, Cyprus, Middle East and New Guinea and New Britain. Lieutenant.

Married (2) Thelma Kirkby in 1958. Married (3) Dame Zara Holt, widow of Harold E.Holt, former Prime Minister, on 19 February 1969. Church of England. Had issue 1 son and 1 daughter.
