Qualifications, occupations and interests
Labourer and union organiser. Educated at St Brigid's convent at Marrickville and Chapel Street public school; commenced before turning fourteen on railway construction, job delegate at sixteen, organiser for Railway Workers' Industry Branch of Australian Workers Union from 1924 until 1926 and conference delegate; employed by Public Works Department in 1927, later with the Metropolitan, Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board, worked on Woronora Dam; organiser for Water and Sewerage Board Employees Association from 1937 until 1950.

Son of George Clifford, navvy and union organiser, and Bridget Ellen Callaghan. Married Mary Elizabeth Delany and had issue, 6 daughters. Roman Catholic. Funeral at Woronora Cemetery from St Mary's Roman Catholic cathedral.
