Educated at Kurri Kurri and Balgownie public schools; began at thirteen on the pit top at Kembla mine; returned to Kurri Kurri with family and worked at Abermain No. 1 mine until 1917, at Richmond Main from 1918 until 1943; dusted while a miner; member and officeholder at Richmond Main Lodge, president from 1924 until 1936, member of central council of Miners' Federation from 1936 until 1949, president of Northern District from 1943 until 1949; member of wartime Coal Tribunal; retired in 1959 to Hawks Nest; returned to West Wallsend in 1965, active in helping crippled children and the blind.
