Son of William Henry Mutton, carpenter, and Jane Yeo. Married Lilian May Taylor in 1923 and had issue, 1 daughter and 2 sons; his son, Lerryn Mutton, was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly. Funeral at Rookwood cemetery from Holy Trinity Church of England, West Concord.
