Learnt trade as a bricklayer on copper furnace construction in Central Western New South Wales; concentrating on furnace work; worked in North of state and in Queensland; settled in Newcastle in 1920, master bricklayer concentrating on furnace work in industry and building construction ; leading official of Bricklayers' Society before amalgamation and formation of Building Workers' Industrial Union; delegate to the Trades and Labor Council (TLC), actively associated with establishment of Newcastle Trades Hall on present site; member of Board of Health and Newcastle branch of the Housing Commission.
