Australian Labor Party (ALP); expelled in 1926. Joined Labor in 1905. Was secretary of the Darlinghurst, St Leonards and Willoughby branches. Was expelled for failing to vote for the abolition of the Legislative Council in 1926.

Qualifications, occupations and interests
Clerk and secretary. Educated at Annandale public school, Blenahassets School of Accountancy and Ballarat Mining School. On the staff of the 'Worker' until 1905. Private Secretary to D. Macdonnell and E. Grayndler, general secretaries of the Australian Workers' Union. From 1921 until 1922, he was private secretary to T.D. Mutch. Share registrar with the Primary Producers' Bank until after 1934. Joined Westphal and Clarke, wine and spirit merchants; was a tally clerk on the Sydney wharves; and operated a scheelite and tungsten mine at Barraba during the Second World War. Fellow of the Institute of Incorporated Secretaries and a member of the Commercial Travellers Association between 1925 and 1953. Freemason. Ceased to be Member on the reconstitution of the Legislative Council in 1934.

Son of Thomas Carlyle Akhurst, master printer, accountant and English migrant, and Emily Kate Naphthali. Married (1) Laura Ellen Thomas on 15 February 1910 , and had issue, one son and one daughter. Married (2) Marian Lucardo Wells in 1920, and had issue, one daughter. Married (3) Ethel May Smith on 13 January 1943. Funeral service was held at St John's Church of England, Rockdale. Cremation at Woronora.
