Qualifications, occupations and interests
Merchant. In 1838, joined John Gilchrist in the mercantile and shipping firm of Gilchrist and Alexander, subscribing three-sevenths of the capital. In the 1840's the firm introduced many Scottish immigrants and in 1845 loaded more ships on agency to London than any other Sydney firm. The firm became Gilchrist, Alexander and Company when J.B. Watt (who later became a member of the Legislative Council) became a partner in 1852. John Alexander was in business as a merchant own his own from 1853. By 1859 he was also a squatter and by 1866 held many runs with J.C. Ryrie. He was involved with pastoral finance.
