Qualifications, occupations and interests
Minister of Religion. Educated in New Zealand; was raised on a farm; left in c.1885 to join the Salvation Army which served for seventeen years, adopting the mane of Wilson; for some time was in New Zealand, then was appointed in charge of the Salvation Army home for the training of officers in Melbourne; became a major; returned to Auckland in c.1902, edited the Christian Worker; was received into the Methodist Ministry, ran the Auckland Methodist Mission 1903-1913, in New South Wales in 1913, participated in a country mission, went to the United Kingdom in 1914 on a lecturing tour; visited battlefields and returned to Australia; became a Chaplain to the Forces in 1916, was attached to the mining corps in France, and was on active service from 1916-1917; invalided home; was on a fund raising tour, then in charge of Bourke Street Methodist Church; forced to resign in the Ministry to enter Parliament; became an estate agent; was a councillor of the Millions Club in 1918; Protestant federation in 1921.

Son of John Newbegin, shipwright, and Australian migrant, and Marjorie Bow, Scottish migrant. Married Jeannnie Geraty on 3 December 1888 at Christchurch, New Zealand and had issue, 4 daughters and 2 sons. Funeral at Rookwood crematorium from Bourke Street Methodist church.
