Coalminer. Educated to primary school. Worked all of his mining life in Wallsend Colliery, and for 2 years as a water bailer and 'doer of general tasks', then for 12 years hewing coal; while performing the latter job was a secretary of Wallsend Lodge, Miners' Union from 1891 until 1894. President of New South Wales branch of the Australasian Labor Federation in 1897. After election to federal parliament was Chairman of parliamentary delegations to Papua in 1911 and to the Imperial Parliamentary Association in London in 1916.
