Educated at Westminster School and St John's College, Oxford, BA in 1882; admitted as a solicitor in London in 1886; arrived in Sydney in 1888, joined brother's legal firm, at a later time became a partner in Hemsley and Perkins, and from 1894 in Allen, Allen and Hemsley; director of Mt Isa Mines Limited from 1924 until 1936, New Guinea Goldfields Limited from 1929 until 1936; president of Incorporated Law Institute from 1917 until 1920; chairman of directors at St Luke's Hospital; Union club.
