Entered the public service as a clerk in the Public Library then as a junior clerk in Colonial Secretary's department in 1879; left in 1885 to study law in the office of George Knox; called to the Bar in 1887; specialised in criminal law; trustee of Kurnell Park; racegoer and racehorse owner.
