Government Surveyor. Became a licensed surveyor with the New South Wales Department of Lands in 1877. Second class surveyor in 1882 who resigned upon standing for the Legislative Assembly. Moved to federal politics in 1901. Retired in 1910 and devoted to himself to farming on the Tweed River. Became an author.
