Qualifications, occupations and interests
Publican and farmer. Arrived in Sydney in 1838. For many years was the overseer of a farm in the Bathurst district. Went to the California gold rush and spent 18 months working in a store. Returned to Australia in 1851 and became a publican at Orange. Purchased a homestead at Collwood in 1861 and returned to farming. Trustee of Government Savings Bank of New South Wales. Elder of Presbyterian Church.

Alderman of Orange Council and was a Chairman 3 times from 1861 until 1863.
Personal
Farmer. Married Margaret McLean, daughter of Roderick McLean of the Isle of Skye, in 1851 at Bathurst according to Presbyterian rites, and they had 2 daughters and 7 sons.
