Qualifications, occupations and interests
Clerk, Accountant and Journalist. Educated privately and at the University of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Joined Bank of New South Wales as a clerk in 1850. Transferred to Melbourne in 1852; Accountant at the Geelong Branch and from 1852 until 1854 was a manager at the Ballarat Branch in 1854. After 6 months was arrested and sentenced to 5 years hard labour. Released by a Parliamentary Committee enquiry in 1857. Journeyed to Brisbane where he worked as a journalist and correspondent. Agent in Scotland for fathers' Moreton Bay Company in 1861. Clerk in Audit Office in Sydney from 1866 until 1868.
