Australian Labor Party (ALP). Joined ALP before the 1910 election. Left over conscription issue in 1916.

Commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in 1911.
Qualifications, occupations and interests
Blacksmith. Educated at a Balmain convent school and Fort Street Public School. Worked at Booth's sawmills, Balmain at age 10. Apprenticed as a Blacksmith with P.N Russell & Co,. then Mort's Dock in 1868. Joined Railways Department in 1876. Became a foreman. Active in iron trade strike in 1882. Assisted to found Railway and Tramway Association. First President 1885; Dismissed from railways for union activities in 1890. Established an auctioneering business in Darling Harbour. After a 1894 defeat wrote for the Freemans Journal. First President of the New South Wales Rugby League in 1909. Trustee of Taronga Park from 1912 until 1926.
