Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Arrived in New South Wales with parents in May 1828 in the 'Alexander Henry'. His father became a settler on large grants in the Hunter River district. Educated in Maitland. Took up Thungalier run near Walgett with his brothers in 1843; became a manager in 1847. Given land in Hunter District by father in 1852; by 1877 had enlarged it to 20,000 acres, growing oranges and wheat; later enlarged it to 25,000 acres. Became a squatter on Culgoa River in 1857. c.1858 took up Gnomery and Wyambah, 250,000 acres on Warrego River in Queensland. Hurt by 1890's depression and drought. By 1896 the Bank of New South Wales had taken over the properties.
