Oil and colourman. Succesful in the oil and colour trade. Purchased Mr Court's extensive oil and colour trade with his business partner, E Beaumont. In 1859-1861 he visited Ireland. Retired oil and colourman when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly. Became a partner in the Sydney firm, Michael and Thomas J Chapman, oil and colourmen. Retired around 1876-1877. Was described as a propety owner at the time of his death.

Son of William Chapman, property owner, and his wife Mary. Arrived in New South Wales in 1840. Married Catherine Shanahan on 11 December 1846 in Sydney and had issue, 1 son and 3 daughters. Methodist.
