Community Activity

Prior to entering Parliament, Dr Amanda Cohn was a GP and frontline emergency services volunteer.

Dr Cohn trained at the University of New South Wales Rural Clinical School in Albury-Wodonga and has worked in community health, Aboriginal Medical Services and emergency departments across inland regional NSW. As a GP, Dr Cohn was a provider of medical abortion, gender-affirming care and health assessments for newly arrived refugees.

As an SES volunteer for more than a decade, she was deployed across the state from Glen Innes to the Hawkesbury to Queanbeyan to support local emergency responses. She is a trained flood rescue boat operator and swift water rescue technician, and received the SES Commissioner's Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding service provided during the 2019-2020 bushfires.

Dr Cohn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies, Bachelor of Medical Studies, Doctor of Medicine, Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology, Masters of International Public Health, and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. She has published peer-reviewed research on gender equity in Australian health leadership, medical education, sexual health, the health impacts of indoor gas heaters and analysis of the reporting on methamphetamine use.

Dr Cohn was the first Green and youngest woman ever elected to Albury City Council, with fellow councillors electing her Deputy Mayor from 2016 to 2021. On Council, she led initiatives for climate action, protection of native vegetation, recognition of First Nations heritage, as well as inclusion and accessibility for people with a disability, LGBTQIA+ and multicultural communities. During this time, Dr Cohn drove regional coordination to support victim survivors of family violence as Chair of the Border Domestic Violence Network and also served on the board of Parklands Albury-Wodonga.
