Arrived in New South Wales c.1883; at an early age engaged in retailing boots, later with other members of the family established in the boot firm of Joe Gardiner Limited of which he was managing director until sold in 1927; acquired city property, including a 60 year license of resumed land at Wynyard station in 1927, on which the Plaza Hotel was built of which he was licensee.
