Builder. Apprenticed as a builder with List Brothers Sydney at age 16; admitted as a partner at age 24, firm becoming List & Withers; carried on business as a builder alone. After entering Parliament gave up building and became a wealthy land auctioneer and valuer, also a land speculator; owned much land with J.F Burns and R.B Smith. Promoter and trustee of Sydney Permanent Freehold Land and Building Society established in 1875. Promoter and director of first land buying society in Sydney. Later was a land agent in Perth in Western Australia. Interested in sanitary reform. Member of volunteer artillery for 11 years and was known as a good shot.
