Qualifications, occupations and interests
Brewer. Lived in Gloucester Road, New Barnet in a house named 'Clifton Villa'. Educated in Edinburgh changing his religion to Protestant from Roman Catholic which later had bearing upon his becoming a Member of the Legislative Council. Employed in India as a clerk. Travelled to British Columbia before settling in Tasmania and then Melbourne. When he retired from brewing and politics, Henry who had amassed a fortune in real estate, returned to England to live in Brighton and London. He lived for a while in "Melbourne Lodge", Ealing. Died when staying at Oak House, South Mimms, Middlesex, England. Burial place unknown.

Local Government Activity
On 1 December 1842 Condell was elected to the first Melbourne City Council (for Gipps Ward) and on 3 December he was elected first Mayor of Melbourne. He was Mayor until 1844.
Personal
Son and sixth child of Joseph Condell (snr) a Scot born in Musselburgh, Scotland on 19 June 1749, and martha French, a Portuguese woman born in Madeira in 1765. Martha and Joseph were married in London in a Roman catholic ceremony in Lincoln-in-Fields, Holborn, on 16 January 1785. Henry was christened on 29 September 1797 in Sao Pedro, Funchal, as a Roman Catholic. Married Marion Vallange from Musselburgh on 28 May 1822 and had issue, 1 daughter and 1 son. Protestant with Roman Catholic family.
