The Staysafe Committee conducted an inquiry into the effectiveness of current traffic control strategies in the immediate vicinity of schools in New South Wales. The Staysafe Committee issued its first report for the inquiry into traffic
control and safety around schools (Staysafe 53 (2001) - Part 1: Major
recommendations and summary) in July 2001. In November 2001, the New South
Wales government responded to the report and its findings, announcing a series
of initiatives to improve the safety of school travel. These initiatives
included 40 km/h speed limits outside all schools, standardised hours of school
speed zoning, the introduction of specific colour and design characteristics
for school precincts, increased numbers of school crossing supervisors, more
minor capital roadworks expenditure outside schools, the establishment of a
central database of school traffic facilities, new guidelines developed to
assist schools wanting improved school traffic facilities, new guidelines for
school crossing supervisors, a bus safety education kit, the establishment of a
review panel to examine decision making about school traffic facilities, and
the recognition of parental road use behaviour problems around schools.
