Regional NSW: A demographic and economic snapshot

This briefing paper presents a snapshot of regional NSW's demographic, economic and labour force characteristics.

The paper offers insight into differences between the State's regions and Greater Sydney by comparing different parts of regional NSW now and into the future. It aims to show readers that regional NSW is not monolithic, and that policies that may work in cities—or even in certain regions—may not be suitable elsewhere in the State.

The paper is split into two parts. Part One presents a statistical overview of the NSW regions, covering indicators such as population change, economic performance, and labour force characteristics. Part Two considers the future economic and social trends expected to impact regional NSW. It provides an overview of the changes forecast to affect regional NSW, as well as proposed policy responses to these challenges.
