Writs issued for by-elections

Writs issued for by-elections

On Friday 21 January the Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly, the Hon. Jonathan O’Dea MP, issued the writs for by-elections to be held for the seats of Willoughby, Monaro, Bega and Strathfield on Saturday 12 February 2022.

A writ is an official document which formally directs the Electoral Commissioner to hold an election and record the results. The writ informs the Commissioner of the nomination day, polling day, and date for returning the writs.

In a general election, a writ is issued by the Governor and signed by the Premier. But in the case of a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly, the Speaker issues the writ directly to the NSW Electoral Commissioner calling for a by-election.

Nominations for the by-election will close at 12.00 noon on Thursday 27 January 2022, with the NSW Electoral Commission required to return the writs on Tuesday 22 March 2022.
