The Immortals

The Immortals

As the NSW Legislative Council prepares to celebrate its bicentenary in 2024, we're stepping inside the chamber with President Matthew Mason-Cox to discover 'The Immortals' in a new video series - and the first video is out now, below.

Just who are 'The Immortals'? They're eight esteemed figures from the Upper House's history, each with a marble likeness gracing the chamber's walls. In this series we'll find out just who they were in life, and how they came to be commemorated in this unique way.

This first video introduces the late Honourable Virginia Chadwick AO – the Council's first female President and indeed the NSW Parliament's first female Presiding Officer. Look out for future Immortals videos over the coming months, together with a range of bicentenary activities commemorating 200 years since the Council met for the very first time, in the first example of deliberative government in Australia.
