556 - Regional Transport and Roads - COST MANUFACTURING TRAINS

Farraway, Sam to the Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Special Minister of State, Minister for Roads, Minister for the Arts, and Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy representing the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads
COST MANUFACTURING TRAINS

(1) As Minister for Regional Transport, what is an acceptable cost to return manufacturing of trains to NSW?

Answer -

I am advised

The NSW Government policy was costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office prior to the 2023 State Election.

Sydney Trains and Transport for NSW are currently collaborating on planning for the future fleet. This planning includes local industry and stakeholder engagement to inform a business case for Government consideration.

The former Liberal-National government went to great efforts to undermine local manufacturing, which included procuring heavy rail rolling stock from China and South Korea, metro rolling stock from India, light rail rolling stock from France and Spain and ferries from China and Indonesia.

Given the former Liberal-National government’s appalling record on budget blowouts and increased costs of rectification works, the current NSW Government will ensure that projects are properly scoped and costed prior to commissioning.
