1935 - Regional Water - WATER EXTRACTED FROM THE BARWON-DARLING RIVER SYSTEM

Mookhey, Daniel to the Minister for Primary Industries, Minister for Regional Water, Minister for Trade and Industry

How much water has been extracted from the Barwon-Darling River system between the Queensland border and Wilcannia?

Answer -

The Barwon Darling is an unregulated river system and extraction from year to year is highly variable it depends on rainfall and river flows (not storage releases).

High extractions correspond with high flow events, particularly when on farm storages can be used to temporarily store water. Below are the annual usage figures from the Barwon Darling river system from 1993⁄94 to 2016⁄17.

To put this into context, it is worth noting that, although some years have very low or no flow, the average annual flow at Wilcannia (near the bottom of the unregulated system and effectively the inflow to the Menindee system), measured for over 100 years, is greater than 1,730,000 megalitres per year, meaning more than a full Menindee system every year on average.

Annual usage figures from the Barwon Darling river system 199394 to 2016 17.
