1938 - Energy and Utilities - SOLAR POWER PLANTS FOR BOURKE SHIRE

Mookhey, Daniel to the Minister for Resources, Minister for Energy and Utilities, Minister for Arts, Vice-President of the Executive Council
  1. Does the Government have a plan to attract solar power plants to Bourke Shire?
  2. What is the Government's plan to attract solar power plants to Bourke Shire?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. The NSW Government supports a private sector led energy market. In 2013, we released the NSW Renewable Energy Action Plan to increase renewable energy at least cost to energy consumers and with maximum benefits to the state.
NSW leads Australia in large-scale solar with 211 MW of installed capacity. The Nyngan Solar Plant in the state's North-West is the largest solar farm in Australia.
The North-West region is also home to two approved solar farms at Walgett and Bogan River. The North-West region, including the Bourke Shire, has an excellent solar resource by international standards. Households and businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity by installing rooftop solar systems. As at November 2017, around one in every five households in the Bourke Shire local government area had installed rooftop solar.
  2. The Government does not have any specific plans to attract solar farms to individual localities in NSW but continues to support the development of solar farms through the implementation of the NSW Renewable Energy Action Plan. There are currently seven major solar farms under construction across the state totalling over $400 million of investment into regional NSW and a further $7.5 billion of solar projects that are either approved or under construction.
Access to available network capacity is a key consideration for solar farm developments in NSW. The government is supporting the work of the Australian Energy Market Operator to identify and map prospective renewable energy zones and identify potential transmission routes to efficiently connect new renewable energy projects in NSW.
