9096 - JOHN MADDISON TOWER

Hoenig, Ron to the Attorney General
  1. Was a drone let loose in Court 17 A of the John Maddison Tower earlier this year?
    1. If so:
      1. Did the drone fly in the court room?
      2. How did the drone get through court security?
      3. What action has been taken to ensure court security has been enhanced?
Answer -

I am advised:

In July 2018, Sheriff's Officers spoke to a person after a small drone was briefly flown on level 18 at John Maddison Tower during a court adjournment. The drone was subsequently confiscated and inspected to confirm that no footage had been recorded.

While drones are not considered a weapon or prohibited item, the Sheriff's Office has directed that drones are now to be confiscated upon entry and returned to court users when they exit the building.
